What is a VTuber?

What is a Vtuber
VTuber = Virtual YouTubers

Someone who streams themselves playing video games, talking to their fans, or doing other activities while in character.

VTubers are live-streamers who use avatars, or digital characters, to interact with their fans. Many VTubers are Japanese, but the community is growing internationally (*since the early 2020s).

The concept of a VTuber has been around for a few years now, but it has only recently started to gain popularity in the west.

In Japan (*started in the mid-2010s), where the concept originated, there are already over a thousand Japanese vtuber, with new ones popping up every day.

Why Would You Want to Become a Virtual Avatar instead of a Real Human?

There are many reasons why you might want to become a VTuber. It’s a great way to connect with people from all over the world. You can interact with your fans in real-time, and build a strong community.

VTubers are often very creative. They often create original songs, and characters produce their very own creative content.

This can be a great way to express yourself and your creativity.

But still, if you are not sure,

  1. You don’t need a Fancy YouTube Studio
  2. If you are uncomfortable talking in the Camera
  3. Want to Hide yourself and enjoy life without being a “Celebrity” (e.g. Marshmallow)
  4. If you are a Fan of Animes
  5. Want to try out different things

What do you need to get started as a VTuber?

Okay. You are ready to start your virtual Journey! If so, you’re in for a treat!

Vtuber get started checklist
Checklist to get started

Here’s a quick rundown of the essentials:

  1. A computer with a webcam and microphone. This is essential for live-streaming and recording videos.
  2. A strong internet connection. You’ll need this for live-streaming and uploading videos.
  3. A quiet, comfortable place to work. This is important for recording high-quality videos without background noise.
  4. Good lighting. This will make your camera tracking look more smooth and more polished.
  5. A green screen. This is optional but highly recommended, as it allows you to change your background and create special effects.
You can use the AI removing feature on the software, but Green Screen will make your life easier.
  6. A video editing program. If you also want to share your videos on YouTube
  7. A YouTube or Twitch or Facebook account. This is where you’ll upload your videos and build your audience.

Now that you have all the basics, you’re ready to get started! Let’s move to the Nifty-Hefty Steps…

What kind of equipment and software do you need to create your virtual persona?

Equiements for Vtubing
A 1660ti GPU is enough at the starting

CPU and GPU

First, you’ll need a computer that can handle encoding. VTubers typically stream their streaming using live streaming software like OBS, Streamlabs, or XSplit, so you’ll need a powerful CPU and a dedicated graphics card to handle the encoding process.

A mid-range gaming PC should suffice, but if you’re looking to produce high-quality 4K video, you’ll need something a bit more powerful.

9th Gen Intel 7+ or AMD Ryzen 5+ will be a good starting Point.

For GPU, I highly suggest going with RTX if possible. You will get some great features with the AI of their GPUs. If not, 1660 and above will do the work.

NOTE: I am being realistic, you can get started with a Potato PC (That’s how I have started editing videos). No need to invest when you have no IDEA.

Webcam or Mobile Camera

Next, you’ll need a decent webcam. Many laptops come with built-in webcams these days, but for the best results, you’ll want to invest in a dedicated camera.

Webcam for better tracking
The laptop camera is “OK”

Look for something with at least 1080p resolution and 60fps capture.

There are plenty of other great choices out there.

Guess What?

You can even use your phone and track your facials. In addition, if you have an iPhone 10 and above series where Face Tracking is available, you are in luck.

Microphone

Microphone
If you can, get the Elgato Wave 3 (This thing is wow!)

Finally, you’ll need a microphone. Again, many laptops come with built-in microphones, but they are awful (when I hear mine laptop mics, my ear started to bleed xD)

For the best results, you’ll want to invest in a dedicated mic. Look for something with a built-in pop filter and a wide frequency response.

The Blue Yeti is a popular option, but there are plenty of other great choices out there.

I use Elgato Wave 3. Hand down it’s great. My So-called “Good” voice sounds very crisp. If you don’t have the budget, no worries.

Go with the Boya M1 Lavarel Mic. The national mic for entry-level YouTubers. (My first ever mic, I brought for my videos back in 2018)

NOTE: You can get started with entry and basic level Desktops and even Mobile. The quality will not that great at first but before doing any investments, use what’s available for you.

Softwares you need to create your Vtuber Avatar

Best 08 Free Vtuber Software for YouTube and Twitch Streamers

To process your virtual model or avatar in real-time, you need software. That comes with a problem. You need to invest in Paid software to get the most quality. You can check Kizuna ai to get some inspiration.

But,

I have checked on the internet and user experiences on different (Open source and Free to use) “Vtubing software” that streamers are using.

I have gone in-depth on this post: 08 free VTuber software that you can use without any money.

Some of them are:

  1. Animaze by Facerig (Facerig was very popular but they changed their name)
  2. Live2D (for 2D Models)
  3. Live3D (for 3D Models)
  4. Vroid Studio

Even without any VR headsets and some are compatible with Mobile as well.

“You need to have a VR Set to make the hand movement high-quality and acurate. But that’s going to cost a lot to buy a decent VR Set”

With these four essentials, you’ll be well on your way to creating high-quality VTuber content.

Step-by-Step guide to becoming a VTuber

The look: How to create the perfect look for your character

As the world of online entertainment continues to grow, more and more people are turning to VTubers – virtual YouTubers – for their fix of fun and laughter.

If you’re thinking of joining the ranks of the VTubers, then you’ll need to create a character that reflects your personality and style.

Not just Copy -> Paste.

So, how to create the perfect look for your avatar character?

First, you’ll need to decide on the overall style of your character. Do you want them to be cute and cuddly, or cool and edgy? Perhaps you want something in between?

Once you’ve decided on the overall style, you’ll need to choose the right proportions for your character. Do you want them to be short and squat, or tall and slender? Again, it’s all up to you.

Once you’ve got the basic style and proportions sorted, it’s time to start thinking about the details.

  • What kind of outfit will your character wear?
  • What color will their hair be?
  • What kind of accessories will they have?

Again, it’s all up to you – but we recommend keeping it simple at first, as you can always add more details later on.

Create your unique persona

Finally, you’ll need to choose a face for your character. This is probably the most important part, as the face is what will really give your character their personality.

Do you want them to have a big, toothy grin, or a more subtle smile?

Once you’ve got all of the above sorted, you’ll have the perfect look for your virtual avatar.

Just remember to have fun with it, and don’t take yourself too seriously – after all, that’s half the appeal of VTubers in the first place!

The voice: How to create a voice that matches your VTuber persona

When you’re a VTuber, your voice is your most important tool. It’s how you connect with your audience and give life to your persona. So how do you make sure your voice matches your digital avatar’s persona?

First, you need to understand what your persona is all about. What kind of energy do they have? What kind of emotions do they express?

What kind of interests do they have? Once you understand your persona, you can start to craft a voice that matches them.

This can be accomplished by using a variety of vocal techniques, such as pitch, inflection, and timbre.

You also want to make sure that your voice matches the personality of your VTuber persona.

Think about the kind of voice you want to use.

Do you want,

  • a high-pitched voice
  • cutesy voice
  • Deep
  • Commanding voice
  • Soft & soothing voice
  • Super Deep like (Corpse Husband)

Example of Super Deep Voice:

Video by Corpse Husband

Whatever voice you choose, make sure it matches the energy of your persona.

For example: If your persona is shy and introverted, you’ll want to use a softer, more gentle voice. On the other hand, if your persona is outgoing and extroverted, you’ll want to use a louder, more energetic voice.

Next, work on your delivery. How fast or slow do you want to talk? How much inflection do you want to use? Again, make sure your delivery matches the energy of your persona.

Finally, practice, practice, practice! The more you practice, the more natural your voice will sound. And the more natural your voice sounds, the more believable your persona will be.

“As a VTuber, Your Sound and Face are the only thing your viewers will see. You have to Nail in these Two”

Bonus, many mics come with their in-house software (e.g. Elgato wave link) from which you can edit your voice. If Elgato is not available, you can use OBS or Streamlabs to add Filters.

The personality: How to create a personality for your VTuber that fans will love.

Creating a personality for your digital avatar can be a daunting task, but it’s important to remember that your fans will love you no matter what.

Few tips to help you create a personality for your VTuber that fans will love:

  1. Be yourself! The most important thing is to be genuine and authentic. Your fans will appreciate you more if they can see that you’re just being yourself.
  2. Be positive and upbeat. No one wants to watch a VTuber who is always complaining or down in the dumps. Be positive and upbeat, and your fans will love you for it.
  3. Be interactive. The best way to connect with your fans is to interact with them. Respond to their comments, ask them questions, and get to know them.
  4. Be entertaining. Your fans want to be entertained, so make sure your personality is fun and engaging. Don’t be shy to Scream and Outbreak like Tyler1 xD
  5. Be consistent. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your avatar personality, but make sure you’re consistent with it. If you change it too often, your fans will get confused and may not stick around.

Follow these tips and you’ll be well on your way to creating a personality that fans will love.

The community: How to build a community of fans around your Virtual YouTuber persona

Virtual YouTubers Subreddit

In the early days of virtual YouTubing, there was only a handful of VTubers. Today, there are thousands of them, and the community of fans around them is growing every day.

If you’re thinking about becoming a VTuber, or if you’re already one, here’s how you can build a community of fans around your persona.

Let’s define what a community of fans is.

A community of fans is a group of people who are passionate about a certain subject or person. They follow that subject or person closely, and they often interact with each other.

(For example, the community of fans around a particular VTuber might discuss the VTuber’s videos, share fan art, and support each other.)

Now that we know what a community of fans is, let’s talk about how to build one.

The first step is to create content that your potential fans will enjoy. (Yeah, that’s pretty generic)

Such as:

  • Instagram Reels
  • YouTube Shorts -> showing funny, cringe and HILARIOUS moments
  • YouTube video with the best streaming highlights (2 Video, 1 Week)
  • Tiktok
  • Medium or Substack -> Share your experience there, to build a more deep relationship with your audience.

If you’re not sure what kind of content to create, take a look at what other VTubers are doing. See what’s popular, and try to create something similar.

Once you have some content, start promoting it. Share it on social media, forums, and any other places where potential fans might see it.

The more people you can reach, the better. Try to build trust by sharing helpful content. Then start promoting.

Another important step is to interact with your fans. Respond to comments, answer questions, and just be present (yeah, yeah, I know that you know).

The more you interact with your fans, the more they’ll appreciate you, and the more likely they are to stick around.

Some platforms you can join:

1. Reddit

2. Twitter

3. Discord (Highly Recommended)

4. Virtual YouTuber WIki

5. Facebook Groups

Building a community of fans around your VTuber persona takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. It’ll make your experience as a VTuber more enjoyable, and it’ll help you grow your channel.

So don’t be afraid to put in the work, and you’ll be rewarded in the end.

The business: How to Monetize your VTuber persona and make a living as a professional

In a world where anyone can be a VTuber, how do you stand out and make a living?

Monetize with Donations

Take donations to monetize your vtuber content
Take Online Donations with Ko-fi

The most popular method is through donations, which can be done through platforms like YouTube and Twitch.

Donations are the most common way for VTubers to make money. This is because it’s an easy way for viewers to support their favorite creators.

Viewers can donate through platforms like YouTube and Twitch, and they can also donate directly to a VTuber’s PayPal or Patreon.

But I highly suggest trying out ‘KO-FI‘ or ‘Buy me a Coffee‘ They are more friendly and focused on content creators like you.

“When you have Audince/Followers/Subscribers/Supportrs, you are ready to monetize any of your contents”

Monetize with Sponsorships

Earn money as a Vtuber with Sponsor Link
Sponsored Links, can be done when you are even at 10K Subs (I got it, you will also get)

Sponsorships are another way for VTubers to make money. A sponsorship is when a company pays a VTuber to promote its product or service.

This can be done through product placement, which is when a VTuber uses a product in their videos, or through social media promotion.

Product placement (Affiliate links) is a great way to monetize your VTuber persona. This is because you can get paid to promote products that you already use and love.

You can also get paid to review products on your channel.

Monetizing your Vtuber Persona with Merchandise

If you’re a VTuber looking to make some extra cash (maybe you can make millions of dollars), selling merchandise is a great way to do it. But where do you start?

Step 01: Decide what kind of merchandise you want to sell. There are a lot of options out there, so take some time to browse and see what’s available and what’s popular on other creators’ merch shelves.

Once you’ve decided on the type of merchandise you want to sell, it’s time to start designing it.

Step 03: Once you have your design ready, it’s time to start promoting your merchandise. You can do this by creating a dedicated merchandise page on your website, or by using social media to spread the word.

Whatever method you choose, make sure you’re promoting your merchandise in a way that will reach your target audience.

Bonus Tip: You can upload your designs to Redbubble, Printify, Society6, or Displate. So, you don’t have to worry about shipping, production, payments, and all those heavy liftings.

Final Verdict: What is the future of becoming a Vtuber?

As the world increasingly moves online, the question of what the future holds for offline activities grows ever more pressing. For many, the answer lies in becoming a Vtuber – a virtual YouTuber.

The appeal of Vtubing is easy to see. For one, it offers a level of anonymity that is hard to come by in the real world. You can be whoever you want to be, without the constraints of your physical appearance or social status.

Secondly, it allows you to connect with people from all over the world, without ever having to leave your home. With the power of the internet, you can build up a global following of like-minded people, who will support and interact with you regularly.

Lastly, it provides a unique opportunity to make a living from your passion. If you can build up a large enough following, you can generate enough income to support yourself through Vtubing alone.

So, what does the future hold for Vtubing?

The short answer is: It’s hard to say.

The truth is, the whole concept is still in its infancy, and it’s hard to predict where it will go from here. However, there are a few things we can say with relative certainty.

  1. The number of people Vtubing is only going to grow. As technology improves and becomes more accessible, more and more people are going to try it out.
  2. The income potential is only going to increase. As Vtubing grows in popularity, so too will the opportunities to monetize your channel.
  3. We can expect to see a lot more innovation in the space. As Vtubing matures, we can expect to see new platforms and services emerge, which will offer even more ways to make money and connect with fans.
  4. Metaverse, if a thing of the Future. Web3.0 is coming. Where VR and Virtual Reality will be the thing. So, why not join the trend now?

So, if you’re thinking about becoming a Vtuber, there’s never been a better time to get started. Who knows where the future will take you?

Hmmm, I am not excited about this. Because I can’t imagine when we will meet friends more Online rather than hanging out physically in the real world.

But also, we can meet our friends more often, no matter which country they live in.
